Arturia Origin Keyboard Synthesizer

The Arturia Origin is loaded with modules extracted from the best synthesizers of all time (Moog Modular, ARP 2600, CS-80, minimoog and Prophet VS) Origin lets you combine these modules and benefit from the additional possibilities put onboard. The result: a new type of sound accessible through an extremely intuitive interface.
Arturia Origin sounds like nothing else on the planet. It not only implements True Analog Emulation, a technology which accurately models analog synthesizers (letting you layer up to four of these monster synths without using any of your computer CPU), it goes a step further. Arturia Origin takes the concept of the analog modular systems of the past to a new level using cutting edge digital technology. You can combine different models from different systems together, Designing new synthesizers that have never existed. Take the oscillators from the Minimoog, the filters from the CS-80 and the Bode shifter from the Moog Modular V to create your own synth.
Modular modes:The Origin has two modes for synthesis: the single Program mode and the Multi mode. Both have dedicated menu access buttons beneath the LCD screen which bring up a series of tabbed pages for getting to the essential programming and tweakery. The sheer depth of synthesis available does mean that unknitting a preset can be lengthy work for the newcomer, and creating from scratch can be time consuming, but familiarity is key and patience is definitely rewarded.
A Multi has four Program slots each of which corresponds to the four Mixer channels controlled at the right of the main interface. These slots can be played from any of the four possible keyboard splits, each with independently assignable note and controller MIDI channels. The four slots are also available independently via the eight auxiliary audio outputs at the rear of the keyboard.
Sound Effects:
Organ sounds are nothing without appropriate effects, and this is where the Tonewheel module falls short. While it’s possible to generate all manner of tremolos and vibratos using the Origin’s global LFOs, there’s nothing that imitates the distinctive chorus/vibrato of a Hammond. You can get close, but not as close as on a dedicated Hammond clone. There is, however, a new dual‑rotor Leslie effect. The underlying sound of this is not bad at all, but there are just three controls: speed, rotor/horn mix, and dry/wet mix. In my view, the last of these is pointless — I either want a sound to go through a Leslie or I don’t — but I’m more concerned about the omissions: microphone placement and, in particular, acceleration/deceleration rates. Don’t misunderstand me; the default values are fine, but they should be editable. The other shortcoming is that the fast/slow speed can only be assigned to one of the eight ‘live’ knobs on the control panel or to a momentary pedal, and it would be nice if it were a destination for more controllers.
